    Science

    Standard 4

Students will understand that offspring inherit traits that make them more or less suitable to survive in the environment.

Objective 2: Relate the adaptability of organisms in an environment to their inherited traits and structures.

    Standard 5

Students will understand that structure is used to develop classification systems.

Objective 1: Classify based on observable properties.

Objective 2: Use and develop a simple classification system.

Objective 3: Classify organisms using an orderly pattern based upon structure.

    Math

    Ratios and Proportional Relationships

Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Objective 2: Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities.

    Number System

Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Objective 1: Apply and extend previous understandings of addiction and subtraction to add and subtract rational numbers; represent addition and subtraction on a horizontal or vertical number line diagram.

Objective 2: Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication and division and of fractions to multiply and divide rational numbers.

Objective 3: Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving the four operations with rational numbers.

    Statistics and Probability

Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.

Objective 1: Understand that statistics can be used to gain information about a population by examining a sample of the population; generalizations about a population from a sample are valid only if the sample is representative of that population. Understand that random sampling tends to produce representative samples and support valid inferences.

Objective 2: Use data from a random sample to draw inferences about a population with an unknown characteristic of interest. Generate multiple samples (or simulated samples) of the same size to gauge the variation in estimates or predictions. For example, estimate the mean word length in a book by randomly sampling words from the book; predict the winner of a school election based on randomly sampled survey data. Gauge how far off the estimate or prediction might be.

    Utah Studies

    Standard 1

Students will understand the interaction between Utah's geography and its inhabitants.

Objective 3: Assess how natural resources sustain and enhance people's lives.

    English Language Arts

    Reading Standards for Literature

    Key Ideas and Details

Objective 1: Cite several pieces of textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Objective 3: Analyze how particular elements of a story or drama interact (e.g., how setting shapes the characters or plot).

    Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Objective 7: Compare and contrast a written story, drama, or poem to its audio, film, staged, or multimedia version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to each medium (e.g., lighting, sound, color, or camera focus and angles in a film).

Objective 9: Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history.

    Reading Standards for Text

    Integration of Knowledge and Ideas

Objective 8: Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, assessing whether the reasoning is sound and the evidence is relevant and sufficient to support the claims.

    Writing Standards

    Text Types and Purposes

Objective 2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.

    Research to Build and Present

Objective 7: Conduct short research projects to answer a question, drawing on several sources and generating additional related, focused questions for further research and investigation.

Objective 8: Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, using search terms effectively; assess the credibility and accuracy of each source; and quote or paraphrase the data and conclusions of others while avoiding plagiarism and following a standard format for citation.

Objective 9: Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
